Just about to attempt this, and was wondering (just a matter of personal preference) How much fabric of the three colors would you buy? I have a tendency to drastically overbuy yardage for my sewing projects, and as a result have never had to develop a discerning eye for how much is needed.

Thanks so much!

I'm serious about buying this home-made plush off of you or anyone else willing to make it. My friend wants one so bad, but the official ones looks so WEIRD, and my sewing skills are so lacking. Anyone, PLEASE! T^T

Also, this website owner (http://theindigophial.blogspot.com/2009/02/companion-cube-softie-tutorial.html) put in a zipper on hers and so did I. Mostly because when it came time to so the hand stitch parts on my completed "core" of the cube, it made my life much easier.

Also, it'll help when you need to clean your cube and when you need to stuff it with more filling. Just open the zipper and you're done! Plus, it makes for a neat storage compartment.

I've been working on this cube in my spare time for the last two weeks and it's quite the project. The work is simple enough, but it is VERY time consuming with all the pattern outline, then cutting, then sewing all the little pieces.

What I did for the pink lines because they didn't stand out enough using just pink thread and doing the satin stitch (the zigzag stitch, but all scrunched together) I cut out strips of pink felt from when I did my hearts to stretch across the whole of the squares (thing giant pink plus signs) and satin stitched over those a couple of times.

Doing that instead of just the little pieces of pink helps because I could center my heart and circle pieces better and the little silver tab pieces better too. It was a hassle doing it that way, but, in the end I'm soooo glad I did it like that, made my life easier in the long run.

My advice to future project doers: buy more than one of each color of thread. You are going to run out, especially if you're doing a buttload of satin stitching. I've had to make 2 separate trips to Jo-Ann Fabrics because I ran out of thread with just a tiny amount left to do with that color.

One more piece of advice: I used Crayola marker to draw on my patterns for three reasons: 1.) It works better than using fabric pencils (the pencil catches on the fabric because it's felt); 2.) it gives you that extra 3/8 of an inch extra you need for satin stitching; 3.) it washed out WONDERFULLY! I put all my stuff in the washer and all the blue came right out, no worries about staining.

Good luck!

if you have some sewing experience you should know what to do with the pattern pieces up there. if you don't, this will probably be difficult to make even with step-by-step instructions so you might want to start with something a little easier until you've got a better grasp on it all.

I love it and have decided to not euthinize it despite what GLaDOS instructs me. XD

Oh, and before stuffing and sewing up, or maybe after, whatever you prefer, take pink embroidery thread (or a zig-zag stitch) to add the lines.

Silly ducks. I have some sewing experience and pattern making experience and this would be my advice, though I did not make this pattern, so I am just making up directions. Also, I haven't tried it yet, but I like everyone else, have a boyfriend who needs a valentines present.

Step 1: Cut out pink heart with about 1/4" extra all the way around. More if your fabric seems to need a greater seam allowance (frays, etc.)

Step 2: Fold the 1/4" under the heart, with the right side out, sew on top of gray circle with pink thread. (may need to cut slits in 1/4" allowance in places such as the round tops of the heart and the v in the middle on top of the heart)

Step 3: Cut out circle (around heart) with extra 1/4" allowance.

Step 4: Fold 1/4" edge of circle under and sew on top of darker gray square. (Cut out the square again with... probably 1/2" extra fabric around the edge, but 1/4 will do.)

Make 6 of these.

Step 5: Sew together 6 sides into cube. Put right sides together and sew with 1/2" or 1/4" seam allowance on the wrong side. Either sew the 6 into a cross-like shape (3 wide, 4 long) like in the paper pattern for a cube) or sew 4 to make a ring, then add the top and bottom. Finished cube should be inside out, and leave a 2" to 4" opening in one side to turn cube right side out.

Step 6: Cut out corner and tab pattern out of light gray, fussy fabric - again with 1/4"+ seam allowance. (The pattern that looks like it is only 3/4 there, and the little rectangle below) Sew sides of right angle (where the missing piece would be) together to make a cone shape. Fold under edge and sew on to corners of cube. You could even stuff a little between the cube and the corner piece to make it stand out extra. Sew tabs on the same way as everything else.
